Typing Speed Test

Type the passage below as quickly and accurately as you can. The timer starts the moment you type the first character and stops automatically once you reach the end. Your result has two numbers: words per minute (WPM), which measures raw speed, and accuracy, which measures how many characters matched the original text. Together they give a fuller picture than speed alone — someone typing 90 WPM with 70% accuracy is, in practice, slower than someone typing 60 WPM at 99%, once you account for the time spent fixing mistakes.

How it's measured

The instant you type the first character, we start a timer using your browser's high-resolution clock. As you type, each character is compared against the same position in the passage and marked correct or incorrect in real time. When you reach the end of the passage (or click Finish), we stop the timer and calculate WPM using the standard convention of 5 characters per "word," and accuracy as the percentage of characters that matched.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed?

Average typists land around 35-45 WPM. Office roles that involve a lot of typing often look for 60-80 WPM, and competitive typists can exceed 120 WPM.

How is WPM calculated?

We divide the number of words in the passage by your time in minutes, using the common 5-characters-per-word convention.

Does accuracy affect my WPM score?

They're shown separately here, so you can see your raw speed and your precision as two distinct numbers rather than one blended score.
